The Girandole Grove, with the corresponding Dauphin Grove to the north, were among the first groves laid out by Le Nôtre, as early as 1663. Treated as green rooms, they both feature a central room with a pool, installed in 1669. On the south side, in 1682, the pool’s coping was decorated with reeds whose sprays converge on the center of the water feature, where a water spear springs from a metal basket of flowers painted au naturel. The shape of this lance, reminiscent of a girandole, gave its name to both the pond and the grove. The pool disappeared around 1760, while the grove itself, like that of the Dauphin, was removed when the garden was replanted in 1775-1776 and replaced by a vast area planted with lime trees arranged in a staggered pattern. In 2000, the two groves and their ponds were restored to their original state.
